What is periodontal (gum) disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and supporting bone around teeth. Periodontal disease can be localized (around one tooth) or generalized (throughout the mouth).

If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to premature tooth loss.
